A brief review of events, starting from the very beginning. Male  Karl arrived to his home nest on March 26, but had to wait for his mate Kati until April 7. Happiness seemed to be mutual and the eggs were laid already on April 11, 13, 15 and 17.

The first two chicks were hatched on May 17, the third in the morning of May 18; we will see how things develop further….

Adults Kati and Karl have spent the last few days in waiting, as have we. Late on Monday night two eggs were already ”talking”, with small holes in the eggshells.

By early morning one eggshell was already lifted on to the edge of the nest and Kati showed us two hatched stork chicks. Congratulations!

A brief survey: the eggs appeared in Kati’s nest on April 12, 14, 16 and 17. The incubation time lasts about one month for large birds, so we can begin to expect hatching of the chicks from mid-May.

The last couple of days with rain and cold weather was replaced by sunshine today – it dries the nest a little; the adults are busy draining the bottom.

Two cameras are installed at black stork nests, one in South Estonia and the other in South Latvia

The black stork nest in Estonia is new to the viewers as well as to us:

The black stork nest in Estonia is not new for the storks breeding there. The nest is quite bulky and apparently quite old as well. The Estonian Fund for Nature (Eestimaa Looduse Fond, ELF) proclaimed this year as the Black Stork Year, and the new black stork nest camera is the Eagle Club’s contribution to this year. Pictures from the installation of the camera and its prehistory can be seen on the ELF voluntary work site. The camera started sending images from the nest on March 29, on April 4 we had the stream in working order. By that time the male black stork had arrived and had done tidying and arranging of the nest. On April 5 the female also arrived and nest life could start.

Kati showing the fruits of "nest sitting" to her mate Karl. Karl had been busy since morning dusk with getting necessary materials for the nest. A crisp and beautiful early morning.

After the last couple of days with poor and rainy weather a nice but cold morning followed. The face of spring changes rapidly.

In the warmth under the female there are already three eggs. In the nest of our black storks the same event can be expected on Saturday morning.

On Wednesday it rained from the evening until midnight and the nest material was soaked all through. Kati tries to get a drainage in the nest bottom so that the rain water will run off faster from the moss. The cold morning was close to 0 degrees and male stork Karl is in no hurry to leave the nest for a wet nature with frost at the ground.

The nest life of the black storks runs its own course, in the darkness of the night two eggs gleamed there.

The camera was installed on the Karula lands on April 4th. This nest was discovered only last year. Favourable southerly winds brought the black storks there the next day. Things have developed at lightning speed. The forum members made a quick round of name-giving: the female is called Kati and the male, Karl.
