The nest of the hawks was found in early 2021, while working on the restoration of the online camera system for the little eagles (in the fir). It is located less than 200 meters from the little eagles' nest.

In the year of discovery, the hawks nested successfully, bringing out three young birds. A year later, the nest was inhabited, but unsuccessful, while in 2023, another successful nesting year followed, with two young birds leaving the nest.

Given the small distance between the nests, it is possible that we will see attempts to visit neighboring nests.

Live broadcast from the nest began in early 2025.

The camera system at this nest was created by Jānis Ķuze and Jānis Rudzītis.

The Zemgalē Region

Zemgalē (German: Semgallen) is a region located in southern Latvia.
Most of Zemgalē is flat, distinguishing it from other Latvian regions, which have both plateaus and deep river valleys.

Zemgalē is proud of its fertile fields, which have ensured regional development for centuries.

Let's get started. Image

I'm grateful for any help and timestamps, thoughts and laughs, or corrections/criticism.
I've been following the nest since it was published.

Sometimes I wasn't sure if it was just a second nest for the pair. They're active from morning until midday. Then they're barely active or not active at all.

Then I think it might be the difference between the Forest Goshawk and the Urban Goshawk... Perhaps the Forest Goshawk has a different pace.

Here's a recording from March 21st that shows how special Mona's calls are.
Mona uses begging calls almost exclusively.
In German, "Lahnen" (to squeal).

I've only seen it in other females on rare occasions. Mona uses this call almost consistently.
It expresses an urgent need. It's meant to encourage the male.
We're mostly familiar with the call of hawklets.

Before we get down to business, let's talk about names.

I thought it was quite sweet how the couple came up with their names.
Well, if I understood correctly, it was quickly negotiated.
Yeah, okay. Image
I find it interesting which names are popular in Latvian usage. Mona isn't uncommon in German either. At least as a short name, a nickname.

I'm not catching up on the last few days. It's always been similar. Morning activity slows down in the second half of the day.

March 24th

05:59 Mona appears at the nest.
Stands, nests...stands.

06:11 Mona returns with bark.
Image

The stream is jerky, there are interruptions.
Sometimes the goshawks suddenly appear or disappear as if by magic.

'12 Mona tests the comfort of the nest.
Image

And for a very long time...

'31 She lifts herself.
Goes to the edge of the nest and leaves the nest.

March 25th

The connection is sputtering and wheezing...some arrivals and departures are untrackable.
Perhaps a reboot or more sun will help?

In any case, the pair isn't bothered by it.

7:30 Mona can be heard nearby.

8:11 Gentle sounds in the tree - Miks?
Then Mona can be heard again. Mona can actually be heard all the time. :rotf:
