I just heard a news report on this -- there are dozens of bears and they think that they have been fed for years, so at least some of these bears may never have looked for their own food.

Destroy them??? All they have to do is relocate the bears to a remote area & the bears will be fine. If there's no food from humans available, they will eat what all bears usually eat naturally. Of course, winter hibernation time is rapidly approaching, so I'm not sure they would have enough fat on them to hibernate successfully-- depends on how well the pot-growers fed them, maybe. Also each day the site publish a 'Research Updates' on the bears they are studying,including news of famous Lily and Hope black bears. Read too the update from today 27th. Aug.on the black bear called Cal .It is all about feeding/not feeding bears. Its surprising.

That is a good & informative site, Macdoum; I have followed Lily & Hope since before Hope was born. I haven't been on the site for a few days now & must get caught up on the research updates. It is amazing that they can go up to these bears & feel around to see if they are lactating, etc, & the bears are not actually tame bears, but fully wild. They simply have been treated with calm respect & therefore are not usually threatened by the people they are used to. There is a wealth of data from their research on that site, of use to anyone interested in wildlife.

This started when I read a half-page artice in our newspaper today.An explorator from the French Guiana has traversed the Atlantic on a rowing boat,got interested by the problem and has now decided to prepare a scientific expedition to alert the public of the dangers. This mission will start from San Diego on 2nd May 2012 in a three-master called L'Elan.
The mission will be called 'THe Seventh Continent'. Maybe I/we can keep an eye on the results.His name Patrick Diexonne will tell us as he goes on this link;

This is part of the reason my mom and I pick up all sorts of plastics when we walk. If we remember we carry a nice little net bag to put it in. When we get home we sort the recyclable from the not.

Ringers found a dead mother osprey from her nest in Iso-Huppio, Juva, Finland in July.
The autopsy showed that the osprey died because she was shot with a shotgun. And she didn´t die immediately but slowly to her nest where were 2 chicks. The 2 chicks were alive and their survival was up to their father.

Iso-Huppio is swamp reserve area in Finland. There are regularly nesting 5 osprey pairs and other endangered species. The penalty of killing an osprey in Finland is 1682,00 euros. The guilty is not yet found.

What makes this just so horrible and unforgivable is that the osprey was shot and killed in the nesting time. This makes me so sad and angry!

I just learned about this news story that occurred in June 2012. It is a wonderful story about saving a rare old oak tree in Texas. From the information at the Y-tube site: "The Ghirardi Compton Oak has been a piece of League City's history for over 100 years. The tree stands 56 feet tall, has a canopy that is over 100 feet wide, and is 135 inches around. It also weighs an incredible 518,000 pounds. A county road widening project put the future of the Ghirardi Oak in jeopardy. Council voted to use park dedication funds to hire Hess Landscaping Construction to move the majestic oak. A project that took them just under a month to complete. Watch the incredible process from start to finish in this video."

Follow-up news stories from September (last month) state that the tree is doing quite well but will be monitored bi-weekly over the next 3 years to help assure its health until it is well established in its new location. Here is the beautiful video of moving it--

news about a golden eagle who has found a new home

a male golden eagle was found (apprently flightless) in Virrat in Central Finland (map http://www.virrat.fi/images/23.jpg ) in last October. it was taken to the wild animal hospital at Korkeasaari zoo for treatment. X-ray pictures showed that it had fractures in the wing caused by shotgun shots. the eagle has been treated in the hospital over winter but it is still incapable to fly so it can't be released in nature. the Korkeasaari zoo has no appropriate aviary for a golden eagle so they had to find another solution. now they have found a suitable new home for the eagle in Riga zoo.

in Riga zoo there is a 4-year old female golden eagle whose father is a Finnish eagle who was born wild. the injured male eagle will be taken to Riga as her fiancé. if these two form a pair and if they manage to have eaglets they will be released in nature in Finland
(provided that a suitable place is found and authorities give necessary licencies etc...)
